Trinidad Rockfish Wars 8 Results - Pacific Outfitters

RESULTS: Trinidad Rockfish Wars 8 – 8/18/18

Hosted by:

Thank you to all that participated!

We had 98 participants (49 teams) in this years tournament! The fishing was not “turned on” but people did bring in fish. Nothing HUGE was brought in, but there was enough for many teams to get on the score board and we had enough fish for the post tournament fish fry.

This year, to increase your chances to getting three species (what’s needed in order to get on the score board), we added “Other Flatfish” to the type list species that could be turned in to score. This was in addition to Black Rockfish, Other Rockfish, Cabezon, Vermillion, Canary, Ling, Green Ling, Halibut, Salmon, and Thresher Shark.

This year we launched at SUNRISE vs 1 Hour Before Sunrise (in previous tournaments). We did that so kayakers can be visible to other motor boats. Early birds left 20 minutes early (20 minutes before sunrise). This worked out really well and we feel it’s safe to expect this again at next year’s tournament.

Our Potluck was outside this year, at the Emerald Forest. That was a little unexpected since they double booked the event hall, however it worked out really well, and I think we may request the outdoor space next year. Consensus is we are outgrowing the current event hall. Thank you again Emerald Forest for allowing us to host our after part at your facility. You all were fantastic!

PacOut Green Team was the beneficiary of the post tournament raffle this year, and thanks to all the generous kayakers, they raised just over $1200 in donations. This will go towards their cleanup fund and educational materials. To learn more about what PacOut Green Team does for our communities and how you can get involved, click here.

Special thanks to Kayak Greg for helping put together a wonderful tournament year after year.

Damen Tesch for coming up with a badass graphic AGAIN and helping out with the shirts/hoodys/raffle. Get a Tattoo by Damen Tesch at Second Sight Tattoo in Eureka.

Thank you Charlie Collum, aka bad ass retired USMC Veteran and local wood turner, for helping us on tournament day getting his hands slimy measuring all the fish that were turned in. Charlie also donated a wooden bowl, that he turned himself, for the raffle. Check out Charlie’s work here.

Thank you Jef “One F” Brewer for updating and hyping everyone on NCKA and LCKA about this tournament.

Thank you to Edub Outdoors, Kenny Baker, and Bransen Baits for donating plastics, jig heads, descenders, etc. to our general raffle!

A big thank you to Native Watercraft, who donated one of the kayaks and raffle items. Mike Mowery, the Native Rep. was formerly with Ocean Kayak. Mike has been donating a Kayak for our event since the first year. Thank you Mike and we are stoked you are working with Native Kayaks. They make some of the best prop driven kayaks in the industry.

Another big thank you to Lost Coast Brewery for donating a keg of Great White, Revenant IPA and Root Beer to our event. Support local beer that supports local events!

Emergency Preparedness Checklists - Pacific Outfitters

Emergency Preparedness Checklists – Get Home Bags, P.E.R.K. Bags, Power Outages

Are you prepared?

Eathquakes, Fires, Storms, Tsunamis, are all things that we need to prepare for. If you are not prepared, it could be the difference of life or death. Getting home or not getting home. Depending on the disaster, you may only have minutes or seconds to grab everything you need to relocate. Are you prepared?

We have create two type of Emergency Preparedness Kits that every person should have:

Get Home Bag: This is a small daypack that you take with you every day. If a disaster/emergency takes place, there is a good chance you will not be at home. Your Get Home Bag has everything you need to get home or deal with a disaster away from home.

P.E.R.K. (Personal Emergency Relocation Kit): This is your larger duffle that you keep at home with everything you need, if you have seconds to evacuate. Grab it and go!

Launch was at 5:35am on the protected side of Trinidad Head. If you signed up before 7/01/17, you qualified as an “Early Bird” and you got a 20 minute head start! That means the Early Birds got to launch at 5:15am. Everyone had to be back on dry land no later than 2:00pm.

The weather conditions were EPIC! No fog, no wind, and swells were very manageable. However, the flies were in full attack mode. Some people protected themselves with gloves, hats & buffs.

The bite was a little slow overall, but that didn’t stop people from bringing in lots of fish. Lots of Monster Blacks and there were more Cabezon’s harvested thank Lings. That was a little unusual.

Biggest Fish Contest:

Lingcod: 32″ – Team Fishizzle

Cabezon: 25″ – Team Big Hammer

Vermillion: 22.5″ Team Fishizzle

Greenling: 16.5″ Team Cast-Our-Baiters

Black Rockfish: 21.5″ Tied Robert Bray & Dylan Taupe

Other Rockfish: This was a Copper at 19.5″ Team Screamin Reels

Barbie Pole Challenge:

To qualify you need a kids Barbie Pole, however, Batman, Superman, ToyStoy poles all qualify as well. You are allowed to upgrade the line and use duct tape where needed. No other enhancements are allowed. You also need to film the hookup, reel in, and measuring (without a break in the film) in order to qualify. The only exception is if you are only taking out Barbie Poles (no other adult rods), then you can take a picture of what you catch and turn that in.

Robert Brey won the Barbie Pole Challenge with an 18.5″ Black Rockfish – Prize $100 Gift Card to Pacific Outfitters

PacOut Green Team is a group of volunteers that host cleanups EVERY Saturday from 9:00am to 10:00am throughout Humboldt and Mendocino County. They focus on cleaning up beaches, parks, forests, and other open spaces. In three years they've removed over 170,000 lbs of trash from our beaches, parks, forests, and other open spaces. They've had over 1,000 volunteers too. All the money raised goes towards their supply fund.

This year’s raffle had some KILLER prizes in the raffle. Aquaglide donated a BlackFoot XL, which is their bad ass inflatable fishing kayak. BruSurf donated a Bamboo SUP. Pacific Outfitters donated an Avet Reel, GoPro Session 5, and other goods. Scot Thorpe donated a custom pool cue. Dylan Taupe donated a guided mushroom hunt (anywhere in Northern California) for two people and a gift certificate to his restaurant that he works at called Handline, which is in Sebastopol, CA.
